What Is an Occlusal Guard?

An occlusal guard, also known as a night guard or bite splint, is a custom-made dental appliance worn over the teeth—usually at night—to prevent damage from teeth grinding and clenching. Made from durable acrylic or soft materials, occlusal guards create a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, minimizing stress on your jaw joints and muscles.

Indications for an Occlusal Guard

You may benefit from an occlusal guard if you experience:

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep
  • Jaw pain or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort
  • Frequent morning headaches or facial soreness
  • Worn, chipped, or flattened teeth
  • Tooth sensitivity due to enamel wear
  • Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
  • Stress-induced jaw tension

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, schedule a consultation with Dr. Matthew Boller at Tri-County Dental Arts to see if a night guard is right for you.

Benefits of Wearing an Occlusal Guard

A professionally fitted occlusal guard offers multiple advantages for your dental and overall well-being:

🦷 Protects Teeth from Damage

Prevents enamel erosion, fractures, and excessive wear due to clenching and grinding.

😌 Reduces Jaw Pain and Tension

Helps relieve strain on the TMJ and surrounding muscles, reducing discomfort and tension headaches.

💤 Improves Sleep Quality

Minimizes unconscious jaw activity that disrupts sleep, helping you wake up refreshed.
